CHESTERFIELD, Va. – A Chesterfield woman said she would likely be dead if it were not for the quick reaction from the Chesterfield officers who responded to her home early Sunday morning.

Virginia Wallace said it all started when she informed a tenant he needed to move out of one of her rentals. She said after getting that news, 30-year-old Chad Mrotek destroyed the property and then called to threaten her.

”When he called on the phone he said you better get a gun ready, because I am going to kill you and your family,” Wallace said.

Then Mrotek showed up at her house, armed with a knife.

“I was standing here trying to keep him from busting the door in,” Wallace said.

Investigators said Mrotek broke in, but a Chesterfield officer was right behind him.

The officer instructed him to drop his weapon.

The Chesterfield man pushed through the door, and carried a knife.

“He had it raised towards me and he [the officer] told him several times and then he turned towards the officer,” Wallace said.

The officer fired a single shot, striking Mrotek.

“He fell to the floor and as he was falling to the floor he took the knife and stuck himself in the stomach and stabbed himself in the stomach; he said ‘now I’m finally going to die, I am glad I am going to die,’” said Wallace.

Chesterfield Police quickly responded, and Wallace said she doubts they would be alive if it wasn't for their quick reaction.

“I seen [sic] blood coming out of his mouth, I thought he was dying,” Wallace said.

Wallace looked around her home Monday and the reality of what could have been set in, and she felt fortunate.

“God and the police looked out for me because if he’d have been a minute later I would have probably been dead and my mother as well,” Wallace said.

Wallace has set up a GoFundMe page for the extensive damages, she says Mrotek caused to her property and the rental property. You can donate here.

Mrotek, of the 4400 block of Cogbill Road, was transported to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. He remains in police custody at VCU Medical Center, where he is receiving treatment.

He was charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit murder, attempted first-degree murder, attempted capital murder of a police officer and use of threatening or indecent language over the public airways in relation to the incident.

His court date is pending and no arrest photo is available.
