Suspect shot during Chesterfield robbery charged with attempted capital murder of police officer

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. – Chesterfield Police filed multiple charges against the man who was shot by an officer during an early morning burglary.

The officer-involved shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of Rycliff Avenue on Sunday, Jan. 3.

Chad T. Mrotek, 30, was charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit murder, attempted first-degree murder, attempted capital murder of a police officer and use of threatening or indecent language over the public airways in relation to the incident.

Police said they were called to the home on Rycliff Avenue for reports of a suspicious person.

Once on scene, police said that the responding officer observed Mrotek was armed with a knife and breaking into the residence.

The officer pursued Mrotek into the residence and confronted him, according to officials.

When confronted, Mrotek charged the officer with the knife. The officer fired a single shot, striking Mrotek.

Mrotek, of the 4400 block of Cogbill Road, was transported to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. He remains in police custody at VCU Medical Center, where he is receiving treatment.

His court date is pending and no arrest photo is available.

Police said that Mrotek knew the homeowner, who was not injured during this incident. No officers were injured during the incident.

The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
