RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A Tornado Watch is in effect until 7 p.m. for all of central Virginia. We have the threat for severe thunderstorms developing mid-day through the early evening ahead of a potent cold front approaching from the west.

Any of these storms could rotate as a result of wind shear in the atmosphere. When storms rotate, they can produce damaging wind gusts and downbursts with winds exceeding 60 mph, or isolated tornadoes.

A Tornado Watch means that these conditions described above are present in most of the Commonwealth today, and that means severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could form.

The Storm Prediction Center upgraded the risk across the eastern U.S. to a rare, large areal “Moderate” risk for severe storms as of mid-day.
