LOUISA COUNTY, Va. -- An investigation is underway after a 21-year-old man described as a "strong swimmer" is believed to have drowned on Lake Anna Saturday.
Crews searched for the man, who deputies said had come to Lake Anna to visit a friend and was reportedly swimming in the water off Old Mill Road.
Patrick Byrnes, of Vienna, Virginia, was last seen swimming out to a floating chair about 20 feet from the end of a dock, according to Detective Chuck Love with the Louisa County Sheriff's Office.
The Spotsylvania County Dive Team recovered Byrnes' body, which was taken to the medical examiner's office for autopsy.
Marine units from the sheriff’s office, Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Game and Inland Fisheries, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Louisa and Spotsylvania County Fire & EMS also aided in the search.
"The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office offers our condolences to his family and friends," Love said.
Last month a 50-year-old man drowned in Lake Anna while trying to swim back to a raft.
