GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. — A corrections officer in Southwest Virginia was killed in what the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) called a "vicious attack" by an inmate.

A news release from VADOC says the attack happened at River North Correctional Center in Independence, Virginia just before 8 a.m. Monday.

The officer killed in the attack has been identified as Jeremy Lewis Hall, 40. He had been an employee of VADOC since April 2024.

“Our agency, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and corrections professionals around the nation join us in mourning the loss of Officer Hall,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “Our hearts continue to be with Officer Hall’s family, friends, and his fellow public safety heroes at River North.”

Two officers were injured in the attack and have since been treated and released.

River North Correctional Center is secure after the attack, VADOC said.

The incident remains under investigation.
