Richmond mechanic killed after car falls off lift

RICHMOND, Va. -- A Richmond auto mechanic was killed at work Monday morning when a car slipped off a lift, according to relatives who identified him as Hilmar Lopez.

Lopez was killed at an auto body shop located at 5255 Hull Street Road.

"There was a vehicle on the lift that somehow fell off the lift and on to one of the workers here," Richmond Police spokesperson Gene Lepley said.

Both police and Richmond Fire crews responded to the South Richmond business at about 11:15 a.m. and five minutes later, Richmond Police say that Lopez was pronounced dead.

As detectives worked the scene, friends, neighbors, and family members gathered outside the business to provide support to Lopez's immediate family.

Eriberto Perez, who is Lopez’s brother-in-law, told CBS 6 that the family is heartbroken.

In Spanish said, “We miss him so much, it’s very painful that he left this way.”

Lopez is leaving behind a wife and two children.

The family says Lopez immigrated from Guatemala 13 years ago and went to school to become a mechanic. Perez remembers his brother-in-law as someone who loved going fishing, camping and loved his family.

“Honestly, I cannot believe this. When they called us, we couldn’t believe this happened to someone so nice. We know that where he is going, but still the pain is so big,” said Perez in Spanish.

Mecánico de Richmond muere después de que un auto se caí del ascensor

Un mecánico de coches en Richmond murió en el trabajo el lunes por la mañana cuando un automóvil se salió de un ascensor. Según familiares la victim fue identificada como Hilmar López.

El acidente ocurio  un taller de carros ubicado en 5255 Hull Street Road.

"Había un vehículo en el ascensor que de alguna manera se cayó en uno de los trabajadores", dijo el portavoz de la policía de Richmond, Gene Lepley.

Tanto la policía como el equipo de bomberos de Richmond respondieron al negocio de South Richmond alrededor de las 11:15 a.m. y cinco minutos más tarde, la policía de Richmond dijo que López fue declarado muerto.

Mientras los detectives trabajaban la escena, amigos, vecinos y familiares se reunieron fuera del negocio para brindar apoyo a la familia inmediata de López.

Eriberto Pérez, cuñado de López, dijo a CBS6 que la familia está desconsolada.

“Lo extrañamos tanto, nos duele tanto que haya partido de esta forma,” dijo Pérez.

López está dejando atrás una esposa y dos hijos.

La familia dice que López inmigró de Guatemala hace 13 años y fue a la escuela para convertirse en mecánico. Pérez recuerda a su cuñado como alguien a quien le encantaba pescar, acampar y amar a su familia.

“La verdad no lo puedo creer, porque cuando nos llamaron no lo podíamos creer que esto le pasara a una persona tan Buena. Y sabemos a donde va el, pero a un si el dolor es tanto.” Dijo Pérez.
