CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Richmond police have identified the off-duty officer involved in the fatal shooting of a teenager early Monday morning outside a Chesterfield shopping center.

Officer Robert Misegades was wounded during an exchange of gunfire with a juvenile, during what police say was an attempted robbery.

Misegades and the teen were members of two groups who met at the Chestertowne Square Shopping Center to buy and sell an Xbox gaming system, according to Chesterfield Police.

In the attempted robbery, officials say the teenager pulled out a gun on the group of men, including Misegades. The off-duty police officer then pulled out his weapon and the juvenile and Misegades exchanged gunfire.

“Officer Misegades, a four-year veteran of the Department, was treated and released for his injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery,” said a Richmond Police spokesperson. “Due to this being an active investigation, the Richmond Police Department will defer all questions to the Chesterfield Police Department.”

The teen was killed during the exchange.

The teen’s name has not been released due to state law, but the victim's mother confirms her son, 15-year-old Jacob Baumgart, was killed in the shooting.

Off camera, the teen's mom said even though her son wasn't perfect, he was still her baby boy.
