RICHMOND, Va. — A truck hauling cigarette filters overturned and blocked three lanes of Interstate 95 south in downtown Richmond.
Virginia State Police said the incident occurred around 2:50 p.m. on I-95 SB at Exit 74 (Franklin St.).
State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said a 2000 Mack tractor trailer was traveling south bound on I-95 when it lost control and overturned in the left and center lanes.
“The female driver was transported to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries,” said Vick. “The truck was hauling ground up rubber, there have been no spills at this point.”
A wrecker responded to the scene and lifted the tractor trailer upright.
All southbound lanes remain closed following the crash. The ramp from E. Broad St. (Route 250) to I-95 south is also closed. All southbound lanes and the ramp will remain closed during crash cleanup. Southbound traffic is getting by using the right shoulder.
“There is currently a five mile backup heading south on I-95 and a three mile backup northbound. There are also delays on I-64 east and west heading into the City of Richmond,” a Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson advised.
Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route to avoid delays during crash cleanup. Expect major delays.
