RICHMOND, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation cautioned drivers to stay off roads late Friday and early Saturday, as slick road conditions are expected.

A wintry mix of light snow, freezing rain and sleet is forecasted to affect most of the Commonwealth beginning late Friday and continuing through tomorrow morning.

VDOT recommends motorists avoid travel between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. when low temperatures could cause icy road conditions.

VDOT crews in some areas have been pretreating roads and many crews will begin mobilizing between 7 p.m. and midnight to monitor and treat conditions as necessary throughout the night and into the morning.

Check the latest road conditions using the 511 system by phone, web at http://www.511virginia.org or free mobile app.

If travel is necessary, allow extra time to reach destinations, lower speed and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. As drivers encounter slow-moving equipment such as snowplows, slow down and allow operators the right of way.
