RICHMOND, Va. -- A woman was found dead in a Richmond apartment early Thursday morning, according to Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham.

The woman's body was discovered after a man called 911 to report he had been shot.

The man, who family members described as the deceased woman's boyfriend, then took police inside the Jennie Scher Road apartment where the woman's body was discovered.

Police have not yet commented on the woman's death, other than to say she had obvious signs of trauma.

The man was taken to VCU Medical Center for treatment. His condition has not yet been released.

"I just hope whoever did this gets caught or turns themselves in, so we can get justice, we can get sleep, and we can get peace for what happened," a relative of the deceased woman said at the crime scene.

That relative said the deceased woman and the injured man had children together.

Other relatives indicated the children were home at the time of the violence.

Police were called to the 1500 block of Jennie Scher Road at about 12:45 a.m. to investigate the situation.
