CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A 21-year-old man is facing charges after he was wounded exchanging gunfire with a Chesterfield Police officer Thanksgiving morning.
Just after 5:10 a.m. Thursday, police received a 911 call about a robbery in progress at the A Plus gas station at 9900 Chester Road.
An arriving officer spotted the suspect near the Waffle House at 4301 Old Lane and told him to stop. That is when the authorities said the suspect fired at the officer. The officer then returned fire and the suspect was wounded.
Lt. P.J. McCann with Chesterfield Police said the suspect, Dante Lakeith Wilkes of the 15700 block of Tinsberry Place in Colonial Heights, then ran and hid in the nearby woods.
"Officers quickly set up a perimeter around the area, where the suspect was located and apprehended," McCann said.
Wilkes, who was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, was charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer, robbery, and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The officer was not hurt.
"It’s a safe area to come to," said Capt. Mike Louth. "This is a very unfortunate instance that happened, but luckily for us and the business the suspect was captured."
