Caretaker arrested after 1-year-old Henrico girl badly burned

Posted

HENRICO, Va. – A Henrico man is behind bars tonight after police say a one-year-old girl in his care was taken to the hospital with suspicious injuries.

A little girl was burned severely inside an East End apartment home Thursday night, police sources said.

Randy Leonard Watkins, age 23, was arrested and charged with two felonies; one count of malicious wounding and one count of child abuse.

Police won’t confirm Watkins relationship with the child, but said she was in his custody.

"All the facts in this case are important, including his relationship with the child,” said CBS 6 Legal Analyst Todd Stone. “If an expert can say how long the child was in hot water it can be helpful for the prosecutor, because the longer the child was in there, the more aggravated and if the suspect has a prior criminal history it becomes more aggravated as well."

Police sources said the child’s injuries are most consistent with hot water. The investigation is ongoing.
