Thousands compete in ‘America’s Friendliest Marathon’ in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. -- Thousands of runners laced up their sneakers and braved the chill to make their way through the city for the 39th annual Richmond Marathon Saturday morning.

The race loops through historic neighborhoods, along the James River and downhill to the finish line in the heart of the city.

Runners chose from the full marathon, half marathon or 8K.

  • Dadi Beyene of Alexandria crossed the finish line first in the marathon with a time of 2:19:36 and took home the top prize of $2500.
  • Girma Gebre of Ethiopia finished the half marathon in first place at 1:04:41.
  • John Crain from Blowing Rock, North Carolina, came in first place in the 8K.

The Richmond Marathon, dubbed “America’s Friendliest Marathon,” is one of the top 25 qualifying races runners participate in to qualify for Boston Marathon.

Registration for next year's marathon, scheduled for Nov. 11, 2017, is now open.
