CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Police have identified the woman murdered inside of a Chesterfield County apartment Friday morning as 23-year-old Nishae Samms.

Multiple police sources tell CBS 6 reporter Jon Burkett that Samms was found by her own mother in her apartment bedroom with her throat cut.

Sources tell CBS 6 around 9:10 Friday morning Samms mother arrived at her adopted daughter’s apartment, where she found the front door was cracked.

Officers and forensic units converged on the Courthouse Green apartment a short time later.

Sources say Samms 4-year-old daughter was with her grandmother at the time of the stabbing.

"Shae would do anything for that girl. She was a great mom,” said Brittany Logan, who has known Samms for about seven years. “As a mother, I can't imagine."

Sources say Samms was found bloodied in her bedroom. Investigators spent most of the day collecting evidence and interviewing neighbors.

Sources tell us Samms had recently moved to Chesterfield County from Richmond.

On September 29, multiple sources say there was a domestic abuse call at her then Richmond apartment.

Around 11 p.m. that night, sources say the 23-year-old was strangled, thrown on the couch and a man she knew tried to suffocate her with pillows.

We are told that man was arrested on a warrant the next day in Hampton after trying to purchase a gun at a pawn shop.

"I was shocked and saddened by it because she has a daughter that looks up to her,” Logan said.  “She takes care of her and loves her dearly."

Chesterfield Police have not released any information about a suspect.

Multiple sources confirm Samms did have a protective order against the man that attacked her in her apartment in September.

If you have information that could help investigators, call Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660.

A family friend has set up a GoFundMe Page for Samms to help cover final expenses and to help take care of her daughter.
