HENRICO, Va. – A Henrico family contacted the CBS 6 Problem Solvers after hiring a contractor to fix their leaky roof.

Bryant Etter’s daughters solicited recommendations for a contractor, and through a friend of a friend thought they had found someone to fix the leaking roof.

“Twenty-nine years roofing experience, that’s what we thought,” said daughter Leah Etter.

But the Etter family said the repair turned into a nightmare.

“I feel like he took advantage of him,” Leah said.

Leah said they were quoted by the handyman that he would do the labor of work for $500 and materials would be an extra $140 to $150.

The family is reaching out to friends to help after what they called a failed experience.

She said when he arrived he made a hole in the roof, and said it was going to cost more because there was more damage than he thought.

“I was like okay, we got the $80 left it for him, he got this material and did nothing else, that was it, “she said.

The family told CBS 6 they’re now stuck with the hole in the roof of the house.

“It honestly is really disgusting to me, it’s like he purposely went out and did it,” she said.

CBS 6 reporter Chelsea Rarrick spoke with the handyman over the phone on Thursday.

He said the family misunderstood the price quote.

He also stated that he walked away from the job because of all the arguing and said he doesn’t deal with confusion.

In that phone call, he said if the family agreed to the higher price, he would come finish the repair Friday, Oct. 28.

Then, minutes later he called back and said he would come Saturday and just put the roof back on, but they would need someone else to complete the job.

“I just feel like he went about it really unprofessional, like in a way he was preying on him,” she said.

The family told CBS 6 after the handyman called us back, they decided to just have a neighbor help with some of the repairs on Thursday. They said they are still stuck with a hole in the roof.

The CBS 6 Problem Solvers recommend, before hiring a contractor, to see if they are insured and if they have any rating through the BBB.
