Shooting victim falls out of unlocked car

RICHMOND, Va. -- Police are investigating after a man was found dead with a gunshot wound near Chippenham hospital Wednesday night. He was discovered more than two miles from where police sources said the man was shot.

"At approximately 8:11 p.m., officers responded to the 5100 block of Forest Hill Avenue for a report of random gunfire. They searched the area and did not locate a victim," a Richmond Police spokeswoman said. "Minutes later, police received a call advising there was a person down near the intersection of Hioaks and Jahnke roads. Officers quickly located the adult male victim, who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene."

Someone was driving the shooting victim to the hospital when the victim fell out of an unlocked door in the backseat of the car, according to police sources.

The driver stopped to try to help the shooting victim. That driver was questioned by police.

The shooting happened at Forest Hill Ave. and Prince Arthur Rd., near Westover Hills Elementary School, according to police sources.

Witnesses said they heard multiple gunshots and there was a youth football practice was going on at the time.

Police are looking for a red sedan that was involved in the shooting, according to police sources. It was last seen turning north on Prince Arthur Rd.
