RICHMOND, Va. — One of three men charged in the shooting death of 12-year-old Amiya Moses pleaded guilty to her murder Thursday morning.
Dwight Jackson, 20, entered guilty pleas to murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and malicious shooting at an occupied building, during his hearing.
Moses, a sixth-grader at Henderson Middle School, was shot and killed in December 2015.
She was caught in the crossfire of a shooting on Watkins Street in Richmond’s Northside, police said.
Multiple witnesses said Moses was standing on the sidewalk with a friend, when multiple people on both sides of the street started shooting at each other.
Investigators said the shooting was part of an ongoing neighborhood dispute.
Moses was shot in the upper back.
Jackson’s mother, fiancé, and other family members filled a courtroom at the John Marshall Courtroom to listen to the plea.
Despite his plea, Jackson's sister maintained his innocence.
But Jackson’s attorney, James Maloney, said his client admitted to committing the crime and said he had "expressed nothing but remorse."
In July, a judge found Davarn "DJ" Hancock, 22, of Chesterfield, guilty of first-degree murder in the same shooting. Shaquille D. Maxwell, 20, of Henrico,
pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
Jackson will be sentenced on November 7.
