PETERSBURG, Va. — Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out inside of a vacant warehouse at Virginia State University.

Firefighters received a  report of a fire in the 21500 block of Chesterfield Avenue around 4:45 am Saturday morning. Chesterfield Fire and EMS Station 12 arrived within minutes and were able to put out the flames.

Officials say the cause of the fire will be investigated by state and county fire marshals later this morning and that it caused mostly internal structural damage to the warehouse.

No one was injured in the fire.

The university says Simms Hall was last occupied in the 1990s and was recently being utilized as a warehouse.

This is a developing story.
