HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A quick spin through the KFC drive-thru on W. Broad St. in Henrico last Friday left a woman, who asked to remain anonymous for her safety, with no money left on her debit card a couple of hours later.
“I said there is no way it could be zero,” the woman said.
She quickly realized someone stole her card number and went shopping.
“It was only $50 some dollars. To me, even if it's $0 to $10, if you work hard for your money, nobody should take it,” the woman said.
But she wondered how it was stolen.
After all, she had only used her card at one place that day: KFC, located at 9000 W Broad St. in Tuckernuck Square.
She called the store and told them what happened. She said a supervisor called her back and said a number of people called with the same complaint.
The woman said KFC explained to her how the scam worked.
One of their employees took a photo of her card with a smartphone. From there, she said the card number was manually typed into a credit card machine at the Walmart in Forest Hill.
“What if that was the last money I had to pay my bills, to buy my food,” the woman said.
Richmond Police and KFC confirm they are both investigating the incident.
An area supervisor for KFC told CBS 6 reporter Melissa Hipolit the company will take appropriate measures and actions.
“Who would have thought that getting a piece of chicken would cause this much drama,” the woman said.
