COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. -- A father was arrested and charged with child neglect after his two-year-old son was found wandering alone in the middle of a Colonial Heights street, according to police.

Joseph Daniel Johnson Sr. was taken into custody after the incident.

Two drivers stopped when they spotted the child along the 400 block of Dupuy Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Colonial Heights Police Lt. Tom Kifer said.

When a Colonial Heights Police detective saw the cars in the middle of the street, he stopped to investigate.

The detective was able to speak with neighbors who confirmed the child's home address, Kifer said.

Police determined the child's father, who works an overnight shift, was asleep at home when his two-year-old son wandered out of the house and into the street.

There was another child inside the home at the time, police said

The child's mother had no comment about the situation.

Johnson is being held at the Riverside Regional jail.
