Man shot, killed on sidewalk in Gilpin Court

RICHMOND, Va, -- Police are investigating a deadly shooting in the Gilpin Court public housing neighborhood in Richmond Friday evening.

Officials said officers were called to the 1000 block of St. Paul Street just after 7:20 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a man fatally wounded on the sidewalk.

"The Richmond Ambulance Authority also arrived and pronounced the victim dead at the scene. The victim suffered an apparent gunshot wound," RPD officials said in a news release.

Police said they are early in the investigation and that so far no witnesses have come forward. As a result, they have no suspect information.

"As officers arrived, many people were in the immediate area of the shooting scene. Detectives hope those with information will come forward to provide critical information to assist detectives in this case," officials said.

This latest violence brings Richmond's homicide count for 2016 to 42. Last year there were 41 homicides in Richmond.
