PETERSBURG, Va. — Fire investigators identified the man who died in a Petersburg house fire Friday night as 69-year-old Edwin ‘EC” Land.

Firefighters discovered Land’s body when they were called to a house fire on West High Street at about 10 p.m. Friday.

Land’s cause of death was not released.

Land was raised in Surry and later attended Randolph-Macon College, Hope College, and VCU, according to his obituary.

“He loved living in Petersburg and enjoyed activities there, especially those of art and history,” his obituary stated. “EC had a great sense of humor and liked to share his humorous thoughts. He had a lifelong love for the Detroit Tigers and baseball in general. As a child, he hoped that a random baseball scout would pass by and recognize his ability.”

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, September 10 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Colonial Heights.
