Motorcyclist wanted for leading trooper on high-speed chase on I-64 captured

SURRY COUNTY, Va. – Authorities say a 28-year-old man wanted on multiple charges related to pursuit along I-64 in Louisa County earlier this month has been captured.

Surry County Sheriff Carlos Turner said deputies captured Justin Eugene Abney Sunday afternoon in Surry County.

State Police said Abney led a VSP trooper on a high-speed pursuit through Louisa County on Aug. 8.

Abney is facing multiple charges related to the pursuit: one felony count of eluding police; reckless driving; improper registration; no motorcycle endorsement; and for failing to pay the uninsured motorist fee.

PState Police said a Trooper spotted a Honda CBR1000rr with a Repsol paint scheme on radar traveling 102 mph while heading east on Interstate 64 at the 147 mile marker around 5:23 p.m. The posted speed limit is 70 mph.

When the trooper initiated a traffic stop a traffic stop, police say Abney refused to stop and sped away increasing his speed to 120 mph.

A pursuit was began, but the trooper terminated it 12 miles later. Abney continued east on I-64.

After an investigation and tips from the public, Abney was identified.

“I especially want to thank the public for helping us identify this suspect,” said Trooper Martin Kriz. “More than a dozen tips came in on this individual and were essential to confirming his identification and helping advance this investigation.”
