RICHMOND, Va. — Hurricane Earl struck the coast of Belize on Wednesday night, then moved slowly westward across Mexico at the end of the week. By Saturday morning, the center of Earl was pushing through central Mexico and weakening. It will continue to dissipate the rest of the weekend.
There are two new areas of interest in terms of potential tropical activity. The National Hurricane Center is watching a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the west coast of Florida. This system will stay in the same general area over the next few days, producing heavy rainfall. While it remains over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, it does have the potential to develop slowly this weekend into early next week.
There is another disturbance just north of Puerto Rico. As of now, the chances of significant development the next few days are low.
We will continue to monitor the tropics and provide updates. Further details are available in the CBS 6 Hurricane Tracker.
