RICHMOND, Va. -- The cast of the Broadway hit of “Dream Girls” lifted the spirits of some patients Wednesday at VCU Medical Center.
The surprise was extra special for Earl Fleming who is waiting to be added to the heart transplant list.
Workers at the Pauley Heart Center along with folks from Virginia Repertory Theatre conspired together to orchestrate the surprise performance.
Fleming had no idea why he was being ushered into a room full of people, but it did not take long to realize what was going on.
“You just don`t know,” Flemming said “[I’m] just so glad and excited because we go way back. I`d like to thank the cast and thank the hospital. This has been a day.”
Desiree Roots, a member of the cast, said she first met Flemming when she was 13 and in “The Wiz.”
“He has literally been a part of my life ever since then. And he’s family,” Roots said.
Several other heart patients at the hospital also took part in the big surprise.
“Dream Girls” is playing at the Virginia Rep. on Broad Street in Richmond through Sunday, Aug. 7.
