GILES COUNTY, Va. — A father died Saturday while he attempted to save his son at Cascade Falls at Jefferson National Forest in Pembroke, WDBJ7 reported.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, jumped into the water Saturday evening at about 5 p.m. when someone noticed the child, who was swimming under the falls, had gone underwater, Giles County Sheriff Morgan Millirons told WSLS.
The man never resurfaced. His body was recovered just before midnight.
The child was apparently not injured and ended up resurfacing on his own.
The Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke will perform an autopsy on the man’s body.
Once the autopsy was completed, the man’s name would likely be released.
