CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Chesterfield police are aware of a controversial social media post trending on Facebook.
The photo shows a young man wearing a white t-shirt stating "We shootin' back now" standing against a Chesterfield police cruiser parked outside Chesterfield Towne Center.
"We are aware of the posting and picture," Lt. George Burgess with Chesterfield police said.
Officials would not elaborate further on the post, which appears to have first been posted on Instagram Saturday.
Multiple people called and messaged WTVR CBS 6 about the post Saturday.
Many people on social media quickly condemned the post.
“NO NO NO!! Chesterfield Town Center... really?? Please Lord help us all!” Aril Marie Woody wrote.
"You have my support, men and women in blue. If I'm around, I'll have your back," Rick Henshaw wrote.
Paul Roscher, who reposted the photo in Pennsylvania, warned officers.
"To all of my brothers and sisters on the force. Whether it be with Chesterfield or anywhere else," he wrote. "Watch your backs and each other's backs at all times. I pray for you guys. Keep up the good work. Be safe."
Some pointed out that the post falls under freedom of speech while others urged caution.
"It's just a photo! Lets not make assumptions," Ashley Lauren said.
