ASHLAND, Va. — Nearly half of the probationers and parolees subjected to unannounced drug-testing in Hanover, Ashland, and Caroline have been re-arrested after they tested positive for drug use. Thirty-two of the more than 70 people who underwent testing at the Ashland Probation and Parole Office now face charges.

The testing was part of Operation Consequences, coordinating by Ashland Police, the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police, and the Pamunkey Regional Jail.

“We are committed to the reduction of substance abuse-related crime and taking a proactive approach in dealing with heroin/opioid abuse,” VADOC Director Harold Clarke said. “Our Probation and Parole officers work in partnership with law enforcement agencies to make our communities safer, reduce victimization, and reduce recidivism.”

Heroin/opioids and cocaine were the drugs most often detected among those who were arrested.
