How to watch July 4th fireworks from breweries and rooftop bars
RICHMOND, Va. – The trend this year is more fun places from which to watch fewer firework displays.
The beloved RVA Fireworks on the James has been canceled over the lack of sponsorship and the popular Genworth Family fireworks and concert event has transformed to a laser light show at Meadowfarm Crump Park.
But because balance is everything, this year there are heaps of opportunities to watch fireworks from one of the many breweries around the city – or from one of the three rooftop bars.
The two big fireworks displays in Richmond are from Dogwood Dell and The Flying Squirrels at The Diamond. This means that most spots in Scott’s Addition are hosting an event around the display, even if they are typically closed. Most events run until 10 p.m. or until fireworks have ended.
Ardent Craft Ales at 3200 W. Leigh St. will be open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. so that folks can watch the fireworks from their outdoor beer garden.
Buskey Cider has a Red, White and Blue Ciderbration planned that spans the weekend, starting July 1 and culminates in a dazzling fireworks display from the Diamond. There will be free hot dogs on Sunday and Monday. Also, they will have red, white and blue ciders. Details here. 2910 W. Leigh Street, Richmond. Details here.
Castleburg Brewery and Taproom at 1626 Ownby Lane will open at 2 p.m. and introduce their Battering Ram Rye Ale for the occasion. The beer is basically a dunkelweizen made with rye rather than wheat, but with a greater body and light finishing hops. CheeZilla Gourmet Grilled Cheese Food Truck will be on site from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Details here.
Hardywood Park Craft Brewery at 2408 Ownby Lane will be open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will six bands at the free-to-enter event. Beer tickets cost $6 and can even be bought the day before! Genius! There will be a smattering of food vendors. And of course, the fireworks display from the Diamond. Details here.
Isley Brewing Company at 1715 Summit Ave. is open noon until 10 p.m. Thy will have a DJ and the back patio view of the Diamond fireworks display. The Return of the Mac and Hollywood Cheesesteaks food trucks will be on site. Throughout the day Isley will tap special infusions: S’Mores Porter, Kiwi Plain Jane and Bourbon Ginger. Details here.
FROM THE ROOFTOPS
The Hof at 2818 W. Broad Street will be the “Big Bang” hot spot from 7 p.m.-11 p.m., culminating in the Diamond fireworks. The party is hosted by Gallery5 and some proceeds from the $10 entry benefit the Gallery. There will be live music by Dharma Bombs and DJ Reinhold and a baton twirling circus performance act by Scarlet Starlet. Cash bar and light fare food (veg, vegan, gluten-free options).
The Quirk rooftop at 201 W. Broad Street will be open from 5 p.m. to midnight. Though the event isn’t billed as a “fireworks specific” event, Diamond fireworks can be seen from their roof, and likely the Dogwood Dell ones as well.
Admission is $20. There are a handful of tables/lounge spots available at $100/ticket.
There will be a DJ spinning music, and a limited food menu.
For the super swank there are 7th floor rooms with Diamond-facing terraces, for views of the fireworks. For $800 the day room lounge area comes with six passes, all-access to the hotel including rooftop, buckets of beer and snacks. These are day rooms only.
Kabana Rooftop, on the 20th flood at 700 E. Main Street, said that fireworks are visible from their rooftop. However, they are completely booked.
