HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- "That's someone's child."

Jerry Ogburn is still trying to process what happened to his friend, neighbor, and former classmate Joseph L. Porter.

Porter, 37, was killed early Saturday morning as he walked along Nine Mile Road, near Pleasant Street, in eastern Henrico.

He was a few miles from his home.

The car that struck Porter did not stop.

"If you hit a squirrel or a raccoon you would stop. How can you miss the damage to your vehicle?" Ogburn, a family friend and former classmate, asked. "He was a good guy. If he can help you, he would help you."

Porter would have been celebrating his 38th birthday on Wednesday.

A memorial with balloons, flowers, and candles marks the site of the hit and run.

Police hope someone who saw something just after midnight Saturday morning will call investigators with the tip they need to find the driver.

"They still have to answer to God. It's still on your conscience. How do you live with that?" Ogburn asked.

Anyone with information about this crash was asked to call Henrico Police at 804-501-5000 or Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
