HENRICO COUNTY, Va.  — Henrico Police are investigating a Saturday night shooting that happened at a cookout along the 3800 block of Ronnie Avenue in eastern Henrico.

Neighbors said dozens of family and friends were at the home when a man there lost a bet and starting fighting with other guests. The man was asked to leave, but later came back with a gun and opened fire, witnesses said.

“Just a bang bang,” neighbor Hazel Turpin said. “It scared me so bad, I ran in the back room.

Turpin said the shooting was unlike anything she had experience in her  15 years living in the neighborhood.

“At first everything was smooth down there, but later on, I heard a lot of shooting,” she said.

When the shooting started, neighbors said everyone, including little children, ran inside the home. The gunman shot at the door and struck a woman three times.

That woman was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Neighbors said they helped police identify the shooter, who also appeared to have a gunshot wound.

While police confirmed two people were taken to the hospital, but they have not yet said whether they found and arrested the gunman.

“It’s awful,” said Turpin. “I just wish we could clean up all these guns. We can do better.”

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
