Driver in crash that killed 6 held without bond

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. -- A driver charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless Driving after a weekend crash killed six people was ordered to remain in custody without bond. Wenceslao Cruz-Marquez, 50, was appointed an attorney and had a preliminary hearing date set for August 12 during his Wednesday morning arraignment.

Those six people were killed, and 10 other people were hurt, early Saturday morning when the van Cruz-Marquez was driving overturned multiple times on Interstate 95 north in Caroline County.

"The 1998 Dodge van [Cruz-Marquez was driving] ran off the road to the left came back right across two travel lanes striking a 2016 Toyota Camry in the right lane, after impact the Toyota spun out in the road, the Dodge van continued off the road to the right overcorrecting back left and overturning approximately five to six times. Six passengers in the van were ejected," Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said.

The van was headed from North Carolina to New Jersey when it crashed in Caroline County.

None of the van passengers were wearing seat belts, police said.

Cruz-Marquez is from Chicago.

Police have not yet released the names of those passengers killed and injured in the crash.

Investigators said they were still in the process of notifying all next of kin.
