GOOCHLAND COUNTY, Va. — The drunk driver who killed two sisters who were returning home from a West End baby shower will spend the next six years in prison.

A Goochland judge sentenced Andrew Chavis to 20 years in prison, but suspended 14 years of that prison sentence.

Chavis, 25, of Goochland, was driving drunk and speeding when his 2011 Hyundai Sonota rear-ended the McCowan sisters’ car on Interstate 64 west, near Shallow Well Road (mile marker 170), police said.

After the impact, McCowan’s car ran off the interstate and hit a tree.

Both sisters were killed.

Sheila McCowan’s teenage son was also in the car.

He suffered a broken collar bone.

The crash happened at about 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, as sisters Sheila and her sister Yolanda McCowan drove home to Hanover following the baby shower at the West Broad Street Shoney’s where Yolanda worked.

Yolanda McCowan also worked at the Silver Diner in Innsbrook and a SunTrust bank in Henrico’s West End.

Yolanda’s daughters, Kiana and Kasey, were also at the baby shower.

They left ahead of their mother and aunt.

“She worked hard to provide for this family and was the best mom I could ever ask for,” her teenage daughter Kasey said after the crash. “I love her so much and I miss her. I just wish she never left.”

Chavis was drinking at Plaza Azteca at Broad Street and Glenside prior to the crash, the Richmond Times Dispatch reported.
