DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. -- Creating art among chaos, with a steady hand Christen Johnson decorates her edible work, not on a canvas, but a cake dish.

"Yeah, it’s mostly trial and error," Johnson said. "I pretty much thrive on crazy at this point. It definitely gets interesting.”

The Dinwiddie woman’s hobby is quickly turning into a passion.

“Believe it or not, I’m not that big of a fan of cake," Johnson said.

The 26-year-old married mother of five is spreading good cheer from her oven and heart.

“It is really hard to ask a complete stranger that you need help for your child," Johnson said.

Johnson is the founder of Cakes for a Good Cause. The self-taught baker makes desserts at no charge.

“My grandmother said if you’re going to do something,  at least do something that people will remember," Johnson said.

Johnson spends about $200 a month of the family’s limited income making cakes and brownies so others who can’t afford it can celebrate milestones like birthdays and graduations.

Johnson knows what it means to go without. She spent five years in foster homes growing up in Chesterfield County.

Johnson said providing smiles to those in need is better than a paycheck.

“It is worth it in the end. Some of the reactions I’ve gotten from the cakes has been priceless. Just to see some people who are so happy over cake. It definitely makes it worth it," Johnson said.

This true cake boss says spending her time and money are small sacrifices to spread happiness thicker than any icing all while cutting through the chaos.

Johnson makes about 25 cakes for her organization each month and each cake costs $8.
