KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. — Multiple people are dead, including children, after a driver plowed into a group of bicycle riders in a hit-and-run in Kalamazoo County Tuesday evening.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department Undersheriff Paul Matyas told WXMI the crash happened just before 7 p.m. in the 5500 block of N. Westnedge Avenue.
Nine people were either severely injured or killed in the crash, according to Matyas. Several of the victims are children, but the exact number is not yet known.
Many of the victims were riding bicycles at the time of the crash.
The driver of the vehicle, believed to be a pickup truck, drove off after slamming into the group, according to Michigan Live.
Police are trying to determine if the truck is the same one that crashed into a median nearby. The truck may also be the same one that was reported earlier in the day when a concerned witness reported an allegedly drunk driver.
THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY.
