YORK COUNTY, Va. — Search crews found the body of a missing kayaker Saturday evening in the York River by Croaker Landing, WTKR reports.
According to the Coast Guard, a good Samaritan called James City County personnel after witnessing a lime green kayak with one person on board capsize north of York River State Park around 12:50 p.m. Saturday.
When the man did not see the kayaker resurface, he he went into the water to try to help., but his efforts were unsuccessful.
A 29-foot Response Boat-Small crew launched out of Station Milford Haven and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew out of Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
Both crews arrived on scene after 2 p.m. and started searching with crews from James City County, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Crews, who used side-scan sonar detection, located the kayaker’s body just after 5 p.m.
Officials said the man was not wearing a life vest.
