RICHMOND, Va. -- A northern Virginia family is in a legal battle with VCU Medical Center over the right to keep their two-year-old daughter on life support.
Patrick and Allison Lawson’s daughter Mirranda Grace is fighting for her life after choking on a piece of popcorn May 11.
“She got a hold of a kernel of popcorn and inhaled it,” Lawson said. “I did CPR on her until the paramedics got there.”
Doctors believe Mirranda is past the point of recovery and want to administer a test that would prove she can support herself. A judge backed that decision on Friday, but the Midland family say their daughter just needs time.

“The doctors wanted to give up on her in five days and she`s still in there,” Patrick told CBS 6 outside of the Richmond hospital. “We`re fighting them tooth and nail.”
Patrick Lawson says there are no lawyers locally that would help them fight in court.

“This is a private matter with the family and to comment further would be inappropriate. Thank you for your understanding.”
It’s unclear when doctors will administer the test, but the Lawsons said they won’t stop fighting to keep Mirranda alive.
“I know in my heart if the good lord wanted her he would’ve taken her already,” Patrick said.
The Lawson family hope they can transfer Mirranda to another hospital.
The family has established a GoFund Me page to help with their legal fees.
