Video captures caregiver dragging, pulling elderly man

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Disturbing video shows an elderly man on the ground being dragged and forced up by a caretaker outside a home for people with mental health issues in Henrico County.

Neighbors said they saw the man slip and fall in the front yard of this Lydell Drive home Thursday afternoon, but what happened next prompted them to hit record

“What's happening inside if this is going on outside,” one woman, who asked WTVR CBS 6 to conceal her identity, said.

She said that while she did not shoot the video, she has complained about what she has seen in the past.

“It doesn't surprise me,” she said. “We 've seen it before, just not on that scale.”

In the video, a caregiver can be seen yanking the elderly man's arm. She stops, but then goes back and grabs the man with both hands and pulls so hard that his bottom is drags on the ground

WTVR CBS 6 blurred the video since police said no one has been charged and the incident does not qualify as an assault.

“He's helpless. He has the mind of a young child,” the woman said. “They are supposed to be protected. That's not fair to him."

WTVR CBS 6 reached out to Northwestern Human Services, the Pennsylvania company that owns the group home.

Officials said in a statement they had just learned of the situation.

“NHS has launched an immediate investigation into the contents of the video,” the statement reads. “Based on the investigation, we will take action, if needed. The care of our consumers is of utmost importance."

Officials with Henrico County social services, who could not comment on this specific case, said anyone who had a tip should contact the agency.

“We first start by reviewing the information that is provided to us by the person who calls us,” an official said. "And they can call confidentially.”
