HENRICO, Va. Congregation members and curious onlookers – as well as an online audience— showed up to watch the brand new steeple mounted on top of the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Friday morning.

The steeple may be one of the highest points in Henrico County, said Pastor Dr. Donald Runion Jr.

The church has been open since 1981 but the congregation has grown and the pastor said a new steeple was in order.

People came out to watch the placement of the steeple.

Christians believe the steeple is a symbol pointed towards the heavenly father, channeling their faith upward and onward.

Cindy Conoly snapped several pictures and said “it was a beautiful milestone for us at Mount Vernon.”

The cross on top of the steeple is six feet tall.

The installation was broadcast on Facebook live and the church plans to put together a timelapse of the installation this weekend.

Online viewers expressed excitement and joy over the new addition.

“I work across the street at the Y,” said Misti Lukhard on Facebook. “I cannot explain how beautiful the steeple looked when I walked out for lunch. It took my breath away! Looking forward to that view every day!!!”
