JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. -- Police have arrested a 55-year-old retired US Air Force veteran after he shot and killed another man inside a Farm Fresh grocery store.
James City County Police officers were dispatched to the grocery store on the 110 block of Norge Lane a little after 8 a.m. Sunday morning in reference to a shooting that had just occurred. Upon arrival, the suspect, 55-year-old Brian Alexander Hicks, was still inside the store and surrendered to police without further incident.
He was reportedly armed with a .45 caliber handgun and had two additional loaded magazines in his pocket.
Hicks is being charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail without bond.
The victim, 34-year-old Gabriel Ryan Maness, was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene. He was a customer in the store and was shopping when the shooting took place.
There were other customers and employees inside the store at the time, but no one else was injured in the shooting.
Police are still investigating the motive behind the shooting and there is no indication that the victim knew the suspect or that there was any type of altercation between the two prior to the shooting. Officials say there is no reason to believe that there were any additional suspects involved and that Hicks is believed to have acted alone.
The investigation is ongoing.
