FARMVILLE, Va. — Vibrant. That is how Longwood University President W. Taylor Reveley IV described student Shiv Sharma.

Sharma, a sophomore political science major from Springfield, Virginia, was killed Tuesday in a crash on Hull Street Road in Chesterfield, some 40 miles from campus.

“The spring is supposed to be a time of celebration and of anticipation for the future. For all of Longwood today, it is a time to mourn this great loss,” President Reveley said in a message to the campus community. “As we hold Shiv’s family in our thoughts, please also care for one another, in the tight-knit spirit that marks the heart of our university.”

He said Longwood University’s counseling center would remain open and available for students who needed to talk about the sudden loss.

Fatal crash remains under investigation

Sharma was driving a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo that crashed along the 20200 block of Hull Street Road, near Skinquarter Road, at about 7:35 p.m.

Police said the vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.

A passenger in the vehicle was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone with additional information about the crash, or Mr. Sharma, can submit a news tip here.
