ESSEX COUNTY, Va. -- One man was killed and two other people -- including a 10-year-old girl -- were hurt when their SUV ran off Route 17 in Essex Tuesday evening and struck a tree. Caroline County Deputies were pursuing the SUV when it crashed near Route 631, according to Virginia State Police.

"The driver of the 2010 Dodge Journey, Darryl W. Rusten, 52 of Ruther Glen, Va., and a 10-year-female passenger were [flown] to VCU Medical Center] with serious injuries; Rusten was not wearing a safety belt, the 10 year old was belted," Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Vick said. "Another passenger in the vehicle, Darryl D. Farmer, 22, of Ruther Glen, Va., died at the scene; he was wearing a safety belt."

The two men and child are related, however police have not disclosed their exact relationships.

The pursuit reached speeds of 120 miles per hour, Caroline deputies told Jon Burkett. Deputies initially attempted to pull Rusten over for driving 80 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone, they added.

Rusten, they said, was driving with a suspended license due to previous driving infractions.
