HENRICO, Va. — The University of Richmond was highlighted as an institution that has significantly expanded access to low-income students in a report by the U.S. Department of Education released March 24.

The university was featured in the report because it has substantially increased its Pell enrollment from 2008-2013 and demonstrating success in completion rates for these students and future employment success.

The percentage of Pell recipients enrolled has increased  from nine percent in 2008 to 20 percent in 2013. The report also noted that the percentage of Pell recipients graduating in six years is 82 percent. The percentage of recipients earning more than $25,000 six years after enrolling is 81 percent, placing Richmond among the leading institutions.

“We are working hard to provide an outstanding education to Pell recipients, to graduate them in a timely manner, and to ensure that they land quality jobs after they matriculate,” said University of Richmond President Ronald A. Crutcher. “We are delighted that the report from the Department of Education chose to highlight our efforts.”

Crutcher was one of many higher education leaders who attended a U.S. Department of Education meeting March 24 on increasing access and supporting strong outcomes for low-income students.

The report also mentioned Governor Terry McAuliffe recent plan to boost higher education funding in the state by nearly $50 million in incentives for colleges to enroll and graduate more underrepresented students. While the plan is subject to approval by the state legislature, the added focus on low-income students represents an important shift, the report stated.
