Firefighter injured as crews suspend efforts to extinguish fire on Belle Isle

RICHMOND, Va. -- One firefighter has suffered a minor injury as Richmond fire have suspended their efforts to extinguish a fire in the woods on Belle Island Wednesday evening.

Fire officials are calling the blaze a log jam fire. Battalion Chief Kent Taylor told CBS 6 they are suspending operations because of the danger of fighting a fire on logs can be. They said this is a common occurrence in this type of situation. Crews will reassess in the morning.

One firefighter suffered a minor laceration and has been taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Taylor said the fire will burn or smolder for a couple of days. The fire is not considered under control, but he doesn’t believe there is a risk for the fire to spread.

Officials believe the fire was probably man made.

Richmond Fire is reminding people on the rocks on the James River to not light campfires and watch your cigarettes.
