MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va — Students at Blacksburg Middle School are off Tuesday after a late-night fire damaged the school on Monday.

District Superintendent Mark Miear tweeted the news at around 9:30 Monday night as firefighters worked to put out a fire on the building’s roof. Crews had to remove art from the walls and cover furniture to protect it from water damage.

The fire was out by midnight, but not before four to six classrooms were damaged.

The superintendent later tweeted his thanks to firefighters for saving the building.

The cause of the fire was not clear.
