CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Nearly 500 teenagers received a different kind of workout at the YMCA in Chesterfield County this weekend.
The teens prepared meals for people in developing countries as part of the winter Teen Leaders Rally.
The Saturday and Sunday event aimed to educate young people about diversity and inclusion.
The kids bagged more than 30,000 meals while embracing the chance to help people who are different from themselves.
Organizers said they were astounded by the turnout.
“We started this as a simple event, expecting a small turnout, and teens came out of the woodwork from everywhere to attend,” YMCA of Greater Richmond Director Of Operations Freddie Mibelli said. “We never thought it would be this big. It surpassed our expectations by over 150 people. This has been incredible. You can feel the energy here at the event to make a difference back at home.”
Those meals are headed all over the world -- from Cambodia to Afghanistan.
