PETERSBURG, Va. -- Two teenagers have been charged with murder after an early morning robbery at a Petersburg apartment where a man says his older brother died shielding him from gunfire.

Officers responded to an emergency call at the Jefferson South of the James apartment complex in the 1800 block of Boydton Plank Road just before 1 a.m. Sunday.

Police arrived and found 22-year-old DeShawn Shaw and his 20-year-old brother, Dontavia Shaw, suffering from multiple gun shot wounds.

Paramedics took them to Southside Regional Medical Center where the older brother died, his brother suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators arrested 18-year-old Daekwon Castelle about three hours later.

Officers then took a second shooter, a 17-year-old who's name hasn't been released, into custody. Both are facing homicide and robbery charges and are being held without bond.

Family members remembered Deshawn Shaw as a young father who died trying to shield his younger brother from a barrage of bullets.

“I got shot first, my brother tried covering me," Dontavia Shaw said. "He got on top of me and was covering me up."

The father of two-year-old girl died a short time later at Southside Regional Medical Center.

Dontavia said he took a bullet to the left shoulder and upper leg.

Police believe robbery was the motive.

"We were hanging out like teens do, chilling and gambling a little bit -- then things went downhill," Shaw said.

He also said he and his brothers were not friends with the suspects, but that they had just met earlier that night and decided to hang out at his Petersburg apartment.
