HENRICO, Va. – Cabela’s outdoor gear store will open in Short Pump on April 6.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be followed by a weekend-long celebration featuring giveaways, family activities, and guest appearances.

And by ribbon cutting, Cabela’s means that an arrow will be shot from a bow by a local Cabela’s employee.

Doors will open for business at 10 a.m. that Wednesday.

The chain, founded by Dick and Mary Cabela in 1961, will settle into an 82,000  square-foot store located at 5000 Cabela Drive in the West Broad Marketplace shopping center.

The much-lauded Wegmans will open in the same center, on August 7.

Both stores are the anchor tenants at the mixed-use facility that sprawls out for 400,000 square feet at the intersection of West Broad Street and Cold Hill Lane, along Interstate 64.

This West End spot will be Cabela’s second Virginia location, the other opened in 2015, in Bristol.

Cabela’s said to expect an “immersive outdoor experience with wood construction, stonework, dozens of wildlife displays and museum-quality taxidermy mounts, vintage outdoor photos and memorabilia, hand-painted murals, an aquarium and an indoor archery range”

There retail store will also offer an express café, gun library and Bargain Cave.

Cabela’s has employed approximately 150 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees to staff the location. Corporate said that most employees were hired locally.

A complete schedule of events will be available on www.cabelas.com/stores when finalized.

Cabela’s joins a group of outdoor outfitters already in the area: Bass Pro Shops, REI, L.L. Bean, Green Top, Carytown Walkabout Outfitters and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
