SAN FRANCISCO — Middle schools in San Francisco could soon make condoms available to students as young as the sixth grade.

A school board committee for the San Francisco unified school district is currently considering the proposal.

One school board member said making condoms available for students has worked at the high school level for 25 years.

“We believe that with the education it actually lessens the amount of sexual activity lessens the amount of sexually transmitted infections as well as pregnancies,” said Kevin Gogin.

Local parents are split on the proposal.

“If they’re having sex behind their parents’ back, why not be safe about it?” said one parent.

“It’s not their job. It’s not their job, it’s not their call. It’s our call,” said another parent. “I think it comes down to the parents. Yeah, it’s the parents that should be on top of this.”

San Francisco unified school district said a recent survey revealed five-percent of middle school students said they have had sex.

The director of a youth center and clinic in San Francisco said their average client is 14 years old.
