Surry meat plant engulfed in flames; no injuries reported

SURRY, Va. — A meat processing plant behind Edwards Ham Shoppe caught fire Tuesday afternoon in Surry County. The building is fully engulfed, with smoke showing, according to emergency management officials. There were reports of explosions heard after the fire started.

Evan Jones, who publishes theSussex-Surry Dispatch, said he counted more than a dozen fire and EMS trucks at the fire, but could not get a sense if anyone was hurt in the fire.

Three fire agencies in Surry are working the fire including Claremont, Dendron and Surry County. The Isle of Wight and Sussex Fire Departments are assisting.

The call came in at 12:39 p.m. at 11400 Rolfe Hwy in Surry County.

No injuries have been reported.

Edwards Virginia Hams is one of the largest employers in Surry County, according to the Sussex Surry Dispatch. The company employs approximately 35-60 employees. They have been selling hams for almost 100 years, and the business has been family run since its inception. The company opened their first ham shop in Surry in the 1980s.
